The grounds
of Loch Monzievaird extend to over 40 acres. The grounds were originally
part of Ochtertyre Estate, which was the Murray family home in Perthshire.
The Loch itself covers 30 acres and is surrounded by lush plantation of mature
Oak, Beech and Scots Pine. The battle of Monzievaird was fought in 1003 on
the south side of the Loch, where King Kenneth IV of Scotland was killed.
The 1860's tourist guide to Strathearn described Ochtertyre as follows : "Ochtertyre extends along the slope of the lower terrace of the Grampians, with a southern exposure. It is richly covered with wood, much of which is evergreen, so that the winter does not divest it of peculiar beauty. The mansion house of Ochtertyre is situated about half way down the slope. At the foot of the slope there is a beautiful sheet of water known as Loch Monzievaird, on the promontory of which stands the donjon of an old fortress that once occupied the whole of the promontory."
